Not sure if you need a CBT?
All new riders must complete Compulsory Basic Training before being allowed on the road unsupervised displaying L plates. Once completed your CBT is valid for two years.
Anglia Rider Training UK Limited, conducts all our CBT training at Hopton, between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. We are specialists in training younger students. We take this training seriously, for the majority of our students this will be the first introduction to the responsibilities of being on the road
We understand you may be very nervous your first time out on the road, but your instructor will encourage you and help build your confidence.
Anglia Rider Training trains bikers in a relaxed environment to raise awareness and safety. We identify your strengths and weaknesses in preparation to ride safely unsupervised on the road. Our training is fun and the benefits will last a lifetime. We understand there is always room for development but our CBT is a great way to help make you safer on the road.
Riders have to remember how vulnerable they can be on the road. It is important that you understand Road Conditions or situations that demand you use your initiative. You will be able assess any situation and apply your CBT training into practice. Learning to ride a motorcycle is a continuous process, and the CBT is just one stage of your motorcycling career.
Please note that some people may be required return on another day to continue training. This is not a reflection on ability but is to ensure that you are safe. Anglia Rider Training is strictly regulated by the government and we ensure that your safety comes first at all times. We have strict guidelines which the law requires us to adhere to.
CBT Day
This is not a pass or fail; it is continuous training that requires demonstration of learnt skills. The course consists of the following elements.
The day starts with a talk on kit and clothing, followed by a talk on controls and maintenance of the bike. We then go out onto the training area, and start riding the bike – practicing clutch control, gears, observations, braking exercises and slow riding etc.
After completing the on site training you will return to the classroom to receive training on road safety. Discuss subjects like road surfaces, anticipation, Highway code, Hazard perception etc.
Any additional CBT TRAINING is FREE you just pay bike hire £100.

A valid UK driving licence. Photocopies or images are not accepted.
Your national insurance number to check licence.
Be able to read a registration number plate from 20.5metres
CBT Requirements
We do need you to have an understanding of the highway code – so we strongly advise you to purchase a highway code book and start reading! They can be bought from the link in the ‘Resources’ tab in the navigation menu.
We need you to have a working knowledge of the highway code – If you require help learning please advise at time of booking as we offer FREE highway code lesson before CBT date.
The Instructor can stop your training because you are not prepared, you will be charged to retake the course.
You will needed to have ridden a bicycle for balance. We also offer a 1 to 1 session before the CBT if you want to get familiar with riding before attending a CBT course.
We can also provide a loan of Helmets, Gloves, Jackets & Waterproof clothes during your time with us at no extra cost.
We are fully insured & qualified to train you and have different mopeds and motorcycles to fit everyone’s needs.
Please Note
- A deposit is required when booking your CBT and will not be refunded if you cancel within 48 hours of CBT.
- Anyone who takes their CBT on an automatic 50cc motorcycle or moped and then returns for a renewal on a 125cc motorcycle with gears may need the full day and therefore a full price CBT course cost is applicable .
- CBTs not completed on the day due to ability and more training required will incur a further charge for bike hire
- Balance of CBT can be paid on the day
What’s Involved?
Over the day you will be taught 5 elements.
In the first element you will be taught the aims of the training course and the importance of the right clothing as well as an eye sight test.
In the second element you will be shown how to use a bike, how its controls work and how to safely pull away and stop.
Then, you will be shown more advanced controls and manoeuvres to get you ready for the road ride. These include figures of eights, controlled braking, junctions, emergency stops ETC.
In the forth element you will talk and understand some hazards you will encounter on your road ride to ensure your safety. This includes being visible to other road users, positioning, separation distance, highway code, etc.
Finally, you will be taken on the road with a DVSA approved instructor with a earpiece so that you can hear and understand instructions given to you. You will be observed on different situations and revisit some of the maneuvers you learned earlier in the day.
If you have understood the training and shown your ability to ride safely you will be awarded with your CBT certificate and some tips from your instructor.
